A typical day

You begin with a briefing for the crew, explaining the plan, the hazards and who is doing what. During the day you walk the site, check quality and progress, solve problems, order or chase materials and report to the manager. At the end you record the work done and any incidents.

Questions you may be asked

Employers and recruiters often ask questions like these. There is no single right answer: be honest, give a real example from your own work and say plainly when you have not done something yet.

  • How do you plan a day's work for a crew with different skills?
  • What would you do if a worker is not following a safety rule?
  • How do you report progress and problems to your manager?

Staying safe on the job

A supervisor sets the example: hold briefings, check that equipment and protection are in place, stop unsafe work and report every incident.

Where this role can lead

Foremen may move into site management or project coordination as they gain experience and qualifications.
