  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults
  • Replace fittings and components
  • Test and record results
  • Follow electrical safety procedures

What employers usually look for

  • Electrical trade experience

Physical demands

Work at height and in confined service spaces.

A typical day

You check the planned and reported jobs, then inspect lighting, sockets, distribution boards and emergency lights across the building. You repair faults, replace parts, test the circuit and record what you did. Urgent faults come first.

Questions you may be asked

Employers and recruiters often ask questions like these. There is no single right answer: be honest, give a real example from your own work and say plainly when you have not done something yet.

  • How do you isolate a circuit safely before working on it?
  • How do you find a fault in a circuit that keeps tripping?
  • What records do you keep after a repair?

Staying safe on the job

Always isolate, lock out and test that a circuit is dead, use insulated tools, and never work on live equipment without proper authorisation.

Where this role can lead
