How Employers Hire Foreign Workers Here

Route: Government-to-government (Employment Permit System). Here the big employers do not recruit through their own careers pages, so there is no honest employer list to show. This is the process they must follow, from official sources. Laws change: your contract and the official page always win over this summary.

  1. Who recruits. Employers do not recruit foreign workers on their own. Under the Employment Permit System the process runs through the Korean labour ministry and the sending organisation in your country, and private for-profit sending companies cannot take part in managing foreign workers.

  2. What an employer must have. To be allowed to hire, an employer must be enrolled in employment insurance and industrial accident insurance, and must not have left wages unpaid in the five months before applying up to the day the permit is issued.

  3. The contract. The employer's working conditions are written into a standard labour contract, sent through the Human Resources Development Service of Korea to the sending organisation in your country, which contacts you to confirm you agree before it is finalised.

  4. What the employer pays for. For general foreign workers (E-9 visa) the employer pays the fee for the arrival job training. It also enrols in departure-guarantee and wage-arrears insurance, and must make sure you receive the 16 hours of training within 15 days of arrival.

  5. Which of our countries are on the list. Of our source countries, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines have country pages on the EPS site. India, Bhutan and Brazil do not, so check with your own government before expecting a route to Korea through this system.
