Geography
Oman has a more varied landscape than most of its Gulf neighbours: a mountainous coastline along the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman, the green Jebel Akhdar highlands, and a vast desert interior stretching toward the Empty Quarter.
Regions
Muscat, the capital, sits on the northern coast; Salafah in the far south has a distinct, greener climate driven by the summer monsoon (khareef). The country's geography is genuinely diverse by Gulf standards.
Economy and Key Industries
Oil and gas remain significant, but Oman's Vision 2040 plan is pushing hard into diversification.
Key industries
- Tourism: Oman markets itself on natural and cultural heritage rather than mega-development, drawing a different visitor profile than Dubai
- Logistics: the ports of Salalah and Duqm are being developed as major regional shipping hubs
- Construction: steady activity tied to infrastructure and tourism development
- Fishing and agriculture: more significant to Oman's economy than most Gulf states
Currency
The Omani Rial (OMR) is pegged to the US Dollar. There is no personal income tax.
Foreign Worker Population
Oman has a large expatriate workforce concentrated in construction and services, though the government has introduced "Omanisation" employment targets in specific sectors and roles — a factor your TAPS specialist will walk you through for your specific contract.
Lifestyle for Foreign Workers
Climate
Summers are hot, especially inland; the mountains offer real relief. The south (Salalah) sees a unique monsoon season in summer (roughly June–September) that turns the region green — unusual anywhere in the Gulf.
Culture and community
Oman has a reputation as one of the more relaxed, traditional, and consistently safe Gulf cultures, with a strong emphasis on hospitality and courtesy in daily life. The weekend is Friday–Saturday.
Safety
Oman is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East.
