Ask a specialist — Fees and payment

Who is supposed to pay recruitment fees, the worker or the employer?

International fair-recruitment guidance from the International Labour Organization says workers should not be charged recruitment fees or related costs; the employer should bear them. National laws differ, though: some countries ban charging workers, some allow limited fees, and some have rules that are not well enforced. So check your own government's guidance rather than assuming.

Look at what the money is for, not what it is called. Names such as service charge, processing fee or security deposit can disguise a fee.
